FAQ

  • What is a patina?

A patina is the thin, protective film that forms on metals such as bronze or brass as they react with the air or water over time.  For bronze basins, this natural process produces a greenish‑blue layer of copper carbonate or copper chloride .  Far from being damage, the patina is a coveted feature – it gives the basin unique character and helps shield the metal from further corrosion .

  • How long will my basin last and stay beautiful?

Merwe uses silicon bronze – the same metal found in public sculptures – for its bronze basins .  This alloy is lead‑free and develops a patina that changes subtly depending on your water properties .  The naturally formed patina acts as a stable, protective layer and actually contributes to the basin’s longevity .  With gentle care, your basin should last for decades, growing more characterful with age rather than deteriorating. Merwe has a matching waste system, akin to the pop-up please contact one of our retailer and they will assist you with the waste system.

  • Are Merwe basins handmade and unique?

They are.  Merwe’s metal basins are hand‑finished by a professional artist , and the patina is applied individually.  Because patina formation depends on the basin’s environment and water chemistry , each basin ages differently, giving it a one‑of‑a‑kind appearance.  The focus on ergonomics and aesthetics also means each design is carefully shaped for comfort and longevity

  • Are Merwe basins environmentally friendly?

Merwe has a strong sustainability ethos.  The company uses approximately 95 % recycled bronze, reducing demand for new raw materials.  Combining recycled metals with hand‑finishing and durable design means a Merwe basin is both eco‑conscious and built to last, minimising waste over its lifecycle.
